I know this has been discussed here but I have tried to fix the problem and had no luck.
I installed from Debian 3.1 r0a i386 Bin-1 download

So......

If you're trying to increase the resolution to higher than Sarge default 800x600, try this code

# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

this should bring up a dialog that ask you about your video card, and monitor vertical and horizontal sync frequencies.
If your monitor sync frequencies are high enough you will have higher resolutions.

as for the bus identifier, if you video card is AGP , try PCI:1:0:0

hope this will solve your problem.
