Arrow keys don't scroll man pages

I've done a few new installs of etch, and this is something that drives me nuts. When viewing man pages, I can't scroll up and down using the arrow keys; I can only use the space bar to go down a chunk at a time. With old releases they always worked.
Is there a simple solution to this?

What is the value of your environment's $PAGER variable. It should be 'less' or '/usr/bin/less'.
If not try setting it in your ~/.profile variable (assuming you are using the bash shell).

Ah, perfect! Taking your advice, this was solved by installing the "less" package, and putting a line

export PAGER=/usr/bin/less

in ~/.bashrc

edit: alternatively system-wide in /etc/bash.bashrc
