apt removed KDE

I was upgrading my stock Sarge Debian kernel with apt-get to 2.6.11-1-686. I installed the the source, headers, and image fine with apt. I went to install some apt suggested packages (libncurses-dev kernel-package libqt3-mt-dev) for later to compile the kernel. I know I would need at least kernel package, so I went to install them all. It removed all of KDE and other lib-packages, installed and upgraded a bunch, which is not a problem because I am using Gnome and loving it. But I did like experimenting with the K-programs and utils. I had planned on installing Nvidia drivers in the 2.6.11 kernel, but I selected X-org as my X-server when the apt install/config was happening because it was default. Now I don't know where to edit for the Nvidia driver if I do install it. The XF86Config-4 file is gone. I am not complaining, the video is working better than it ever has before, even with this same kernel (2.6.11) and the Nvidia driver (I hosed everything yesterday and reinstalled today) . Does anyone know how this (and what?) might have happened?

Welcome to LQ!

In answer to your question, I don't know what happened, but you can always use apt to install it again. :)

Are you sure that KDE was completely removed? It could have something todo with libqt3-mt-dev, because qt is used for KDE.

As for your Nvidia question, I think the file is xorgconfig or something like that.

The config file for X.org is xorg.conf.

Sources

I think I know what I did. I was having a problem with apt-get and getting a kernel version with headers and source files so I could install the Nvidia driver. I changed my source.list from stable to unstable for the debian sites. I still don't understand why KDE was nuked. (not that I am complaining, I am loving Gnome) Today I went to apt-get firefox and it updated fine. It suggested mozilla-firefox-gnome-support package to install, so I figured why not. It upgraded my Gnome version. I am still trying to figure out to what version and what fonts are missing. And yes, Xorg was installed yesterday by mistake. I must have been up too late and had sand in my eyes. xorg.conf for x-configurations is in /etc/X11 as well as the XF-4 file. A pleasant side effect of Xorg is my video is smooth as butter now and I have not even installed the Nvidia driver yet. Some mistakes work for the better. :)
