apt-get upgrade: too many packages!

I am willing to upgrade kde by doing apt-get upgrade. But it calculated 447MB needed. Tons of kde-related and gnome-related packages, and some system things. Got a bit scared... I guess before I try to do this, better ask here what kind of problems/worries/concerns shall I have by doing this?
I mean, the computer is quite nice now, everything works, except for a few details. I don't wanna break it.
Thanks!

Running Sarge. KDE 3.2.3, gnome and, most of the time, xfce4.2.

Why upgrade KDE if you use xfce most of the time? I'd only upgrade it if I was using it all the time and the current release had a MAJOR bug in it that was rendering my PC almost useless. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Because one of the details I spoke about was that I can't use the menu "system" under kde. When I try the system hangs for a while, consuming 100% cpu for a few seconds, and then returns to normal, but without the system bar. It has to do with a broken sysviniteditor, if I recall correctly.
I thought upgrading could fix it. And besides, I use konqueror in xfce a lot.
