Ah, I see now. For that you can use "apt-cache pkgnames". If you have an idea of what you're looking for, you can use "apt-cache search (search-term)". As a last resort, you can look through the files under /var/lib/apt/lists.

You could also apt-get install synaptic and have a GUI interface to see what's installed and what is installable.

There is a simple solution to your problem.
You can type in console "apt-get update" and you'll download the package lists from servers added to your /etc/apt/sources.list file.
After that you can type in console "apt-get upgrade" to update all your installed packages.

To answer to your question type "dselect" in command line and a menu will open.
Choose "select"
Hit your "space bar" to close help

To add a package hit +
To remove a package hit - (will watch dependencies)
To remove a package hit _ (will not watch dependencies)
To search a package hit /

To finish hit (shift+q)

Hope this helps, bye Kess...
