In the future, check http://bugs.debian.org when you have package problems if you are going to use unstable.

he meant --purge, not -purge.

sometimes, strange apt problems can be solved by rm'ing /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin and /var/cache/apt/srcpkgcache.bin, followed by doing an apt-get update.

Sorry, I was out of it for a while. Was busy compiling the kernel 12 times in the last two days, but I digress. I meant dpkg --purge (brokenpackage), where the brokenpackage is the one hanging apt-get. It worked for me, and I was able to get unstuck rather quickly. This works on packages that was deleted before apt-get had a chance to finish what it was doing and if you attempt to apt-get remove while it's in that state, it can't do anything until the broken package was cleared with dpkg --purge.
