Just list them. For example,
Code:
apt-get install apache mysql php4

Package mysql is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package mysql has no installation candidate

apt-get's very handy if you know the exact name of the package you're looking for. If you don't, it isn't handy.

A Synaptic search for mysql pops up a bunch of packages for me, but I don't see any that are called plain old mysql.

You can run "apt-cache search mysql" to find out the actual package names that you want to install. Or you can browse & install packages from aptitude (just type "aptitude"), which is another frontend to Debian's package management system APT.

Do you have Synaptic Package Manager open while you're trying to use apt-get? Only one at a time.
