apt-get dist-upgrade
So I got everything going great, then I do a dist-upgrade and then I got a message saying something while it was updating saying that I had to shut down X or something to that liking. So, I shut it down, then it popped me to a login prompt. I rebooted, and came to the kdm graphical login tool, but this time, each time I try to log into different window managers, the only one it brings up is Windowmaker. I like KDE, but even if I select KDE it still starts windowmaker.
How did I screw this up or how can I fix this? Thanks. |
update:
Well, I couldn't get it to work. I could get it to start icewm and Xfce but when I tried kde it just wouldn't budge. I reinstalled kdm, kde, and still nothing worked. So luckily I didn't have too much into it yet, so I reinstalled... |
does this mean anything? --
This happens when I sign on with any user name, not just one... |
DON'T REINSTALL YET!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you may just not allowed the upgrade to finish... if you went directly to restarting the x system, you may have cut the upgrade short!!!!!! go into root and continue apt-get dist-upgrade and let it finish before you do any rebooting or restarting of X. Hope this helps and was soon enough. |

What I was meaning as far as "this" meant, was what I had mentioned in the first post. "this" meant how I tried to login using KDE, but it popped me directly to windowmaker.
Have you received the message saying what I had described above? The message talking about having the choice to stop (I think it's either X or kdm) X or kdm while doing an upgrade? |
