apt and tor setup/installation

hi debian fans

trying to install Tor, (anonymous Internet communication system) http://tor.eff.org/, there is a package source so i added that to /etc/apt/sources.list. then:

apt-get update
apt-get install tor

(I am only able to run these commands as root, is this normal?) it installs fine, but when i try to run it, using my user account, i get this:

jonasan@debian:~$ tor
bash: tor: command not found

and when I try to run using root user account i get this:

debian:~# tor
May 14 00:23:14.559 [notice] Tor v0.1.0.17. This is experimental software. Do not rely on it for strong anonymity.
May 14 00:23:14.560 [warn] /var/lib/tor is not owned by this UID (0). You must fix this to proceed.
May 14 00:23:14.560 [err] options_act(): Couldn't access/create private data directory /var/lib/tor
May 14 00:23:14.560 [err] init_from_config(): Acting on config options left us in a broken state. Dying.

so I had a look at the user for tor, at /var/lib/tor and got this:

debian:~# ls -l /var/lib/tor
total 1472
-rw------- 1 debian-tor debian-tor 1501241 2006-05-13 22:52 cached-directory

It sounds like i my have apt set up wrong, i am a debian newie!

if you read this far, thank you for your time.
if you reply, then your my new best friend!

First: yes, it's normal that apt can only be run as root. In case a useraccount is compromised, the attacker cannot install malware or even completely take over by re-installing the system!

On the subject: I presume you've consulted the Tor doc's and especially the Wiki pages as linked on the doc's page? I don't use this program, so I'm really not able to help you out. One thing though: I noticed it's a client-server model. Are you sure you've downloaded the right package?

Regards, Dutch Master

Did you also install Privoxy?

Tor: Linux/BSD/Unix Install Instructions
Quote:
Using privoxy is necessary because browsers leak your DNS requests when they use a SOCKS proxy directly, which is bad for your anonymity. Privoxy also removes certain dangerous headers from your web requests, and blocks obnoxious ad sites like Doubleclick.
Did you follow all the directions?
If so you should be able to run it:
Now you can run tor as src/or/tor, or you can run make install (as root if necessary) to install it into /usr/local/, and then you can start it just by running tor.

Detailed instructions are on the Tor site :
http://wiki.noreply.org/noreply/TheO...er/TorOnDebian

Tor and Privoxy run at boot by default.

once you have installed tor and privoxy, please see this site:
http://tor.eff.org/docs/tor-doc-unix.html.en

as this will tell you how to configure your web browsers to run through tor and how to set up tor with privoxy. Privoxy is also handy for blocking unwanted content as well e.g. popups.

"Debian packages have been uploaded to the set of official unstable (sid) and testing (etch)"

Make sure you turn off the privoxy logging like the Tor wiki says to do.
