Applications start automatically on startup
 

Hi ...

I have a really old laptop thats survived a spill .. .well ... kinda survived. If the adapter gets disconnected, my laptop shuts down automatically. The battery barely stays on for a few minutes.

I had a few windows open last time my laptop shutdown abruptly- ktorrent, iceweasel, terminal and some documents. And for some reason those startup every time I startup! Its definitely not specific to the programs, I just listed them anyways.

Other than getting rid of this annoyance, and prevent personal documents open up for anyone else who happens to start my computer, it would help a lot to figure out how this works. There would be a bunch of other things I would want to start when my computer boots up.

So far I've tried to grep in /etc/init.d, because I read somewhere thats where the startup scripts are

cd /etc/init.d
more * | grep -i iceweasel
... did the same for ktorrent and found nothing

In future, please tell us your desktop-manager and distro.
I am guessing you are running KDE.

A solution:

Open a terminal. Type kcontrol Press <RETURN>
Kcontrol opens.
KDE Components -> Session Manager
Set "On login" to "Start with an empty session"
Click "Apply"
Logout, login again
Better?

There are other options (Eg "Start with previously saved session") that I'll leave you to experiment with (useful if you do want some applications to start when you login).

For KDE check the radio button: kcontrol -> KDE Components -> Session Manager -> Start with an empty session.
For Gnome, look around for something similar.

I am running a GNOME desktop on Debian etch.

To access sessions

Desktop -> Preferences -> Sessions

which consists of 3 tabs - 'Session options', 'current session', 'startup programs'. Under 'session options', there is a button 'save the current session'. I just closed all the unwanted programs and saved the current session.

I could not find current session or startup programs having any mention of ktorrent or iceweasel.
