Search this site for "root kit". Several posts have recommended root kit hunters that will search for root kits and root kit behavior. If you get a positive result, check the response on Google. It could be a common false negative. Viruses are theoretical in Linux, but hackers leaving root kits are real.
Also go to security forum on this site. There are some stickies containing security guidelines. I would be a good idea to read the "sticky" messages that the moderator left. If you have had someone get on your system and get root access, you will have to plan a reinstallation, regardless of which OS you use. You also need to find where the hole was and plug it up, otherwise a hacker can repeat what they did and get in again the same way.
If the power cord got pulled like that, you might have some filesystem corruption instead.
