What is the proper procedure for recompiling packages that were originally installed with apt-get? I'm wanting to try some PHP software that requires mcrypt, and the PHP that I installed via apt-get was not compiled with mcrypt support. As I'm pretty new to Linux in general and Debian specifically, I've not done too much recompiling.
I know that I have to run ./configure with --with-mcrypt (or something very similar to that), but what I don't know is what to do with all of the other configure options that were originally used when compiling PHP. Is the "current" configuration stored such that running ./configure --with-mcrypt will just "add" mcrypt to everything else that is already compiled in? Or would I have to specify everything again?
I would try to do a complete install Source compileing is a lot of fun, and gives you a LOT more options. Yes, you would have to re-add all the packages using that, but if you look in at phpinfo() you will see the current config options. Message me (AIM, ICQ, MSN, Y!, etc) if you want personal help.
Thanks, SiGmA_X. The family is moving this weekend, so it will probably be a while before I can do anything. But I figured I'd probably have to redo everything. It certainly does make me evaluate how badly I want to try some of this other software! I may just wait until I get my development server set up. Don't want to mess up my production box.
