Another NVIDIA error

I have Debian Sarge with the 2.6.8 kernel and a NVIDIA GeForce MX 4000 card. I had this working in Ubuntu with their NVIDIA driver, but cannot get it to work in Sarge. I followed all the instructions from Andrew E. Schulman's Debian-nVidia HOWTO (can't link to it until I post more...LOL). It displays the NVIDIA logo and then the KDM logon box comes up but I cannot type. The text for the logon box is displayed over the NVIDIA logo, but I cannot login. I am using the NV driver, but I cannot get OpenGL to work.

I am sorry if this has been answered. I've been looking on Google and searching on here for any answers to this problem. Thanks!

ok, does the "nv" module work correctly (This dosent support openGL)
can you log on and use your desktop?

I cant see anything wrong with your XF86Config-4 file using the "nvidia" module, so instead of loading kdm, stop it with the command

/etc/init.d/kdm stop

and then try a "startx" as a user, see if KDM is the problem,

This is about all i could think of

slayerboy 02-03-2005 08:59 PM

the nv driver works fine.

When I stop kdm and startx with a user, ht nVidia logo still remains, KDE loads. But, the panel is not displayed correctly and when I right click on the desktop the menus don't show up with exception to the icons. I can't click any of these icons. I click on an icon on my desktop and it displays more icons, but I can't click on them.

Almost makes me think there is something wrong with the nVidia driver not releasing the graphic from memory. Here's my system specs:

AMD Sempron 2000+
ASRock K7VT6 Mobo w/ onboard USB, ethernet, and sound
512MB DDR3200 RAM
30GB HD (3 partitions: ext3, swap, and ext3)
80GB HD (FAT32)
SONY DVD Burner
nVidia GeForce MX 4000 w/ 128 MB RAM

I built this system in December, so pretty much everything except the HD's are 6 months old. The BIOS of the nVidia is dated from (I think) July 2004.

What's strange is I had this working in Ubuntu with their nVidia drivers, and SUSE. The driver is a deb package, not from nVidia's website. I'd rather have it be a deb package for ease of upgrading. I might wait for a new version to be available and then try again. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

have you considered using the official nVidia drivers? i cant think of anything else to try.

Yeah, probably you can have a try on that. I'm also using sarge with 2.6.8 kernel. My card is a GeForece Ti 4200. I use the official driver and it works just fine.

slayerboy 02-04-2005 12:15 AM

even with the official drivers, it's doing the same thing. it mentioned something about a rivafb being a module in the kernel, but I unloaded it and still nothing.

Then maybe I'm lucky. It mentioned rivafb too. But lsmod showed that module is not loaded, so I did nothing and the driver works. Probably you can add a line in the modules.conf or other configure files to prevent this module from be loaded. But since this module is loaded it might be required by some other drivers.

SentinelT 03-04-2005 05:27 AM

change the "nv" to "nvidia" in your XF86Config-4 file...also doesnt debian use xorg? if so then make a backup of your xorg.conf file (link) and rename your XF86Config-4 file to xorg.conf..thats what I did in Mandrake 10.1 with Xorg.

another thing to do could be to run xorgconfig and make a brand new xorg.conf file that way.

RiSK 03-04-2005 06:45 AM

I can just say that the problem is probably in 'udev' used by 2.6.x kernels.

Sorry for re-giving life to this old thread. If slayerboy (or anybody) is still here, can confirm the values
HorizSync 30-92
VertRefresh 50-85
are corrects for Daewoo 719B crt monitor?
I searched the web but I only found it here.
Many thanks to everyone who can answer to me.
