Another NVIDIA error
I have Debian Sarge with the 2.6.8 kernel and a NVIDIA GeForce MX 4000 card. I had this working in Ubuntu with their NVIDIA driver, but cannot get it to work in Sarge. I followed all the instructions from Andrew E. Schulman's Debian-nVidia HOWTO (can't link to it until I post more...LOL). It displays the NVIDIA logo and then the KDM logon box comes up but I cannot type. The text for the logon box is displayed over the NVIDIA logo, but I cannot login. I am using the NV driver, but I cannot get OpenGL to work.
I am sorry if this has been answered. I've been looking on Google and searching on here for any answers to this problem. Thanks! |
can you please post your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file
|
nVidia driver:
Code:
# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file) Code:
# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file) |
ok, does the "nv" module work correctly (This dosent support openGL)
can you log on and use your desktop? I cant see anything wrong with your XF86Config-4 file using the "nvidia" module, so instead of loading kdm, stop it with the command /etc/init.d/kdm stop and then try a "startx" as a user, see if KDM is the problem, This is about all i could think of |
the nv driver works fine.
When I stop kdm and startx with a user, ht nVidia logo still remains, KDE loads. But, the panel is not displayed correctly and when I right click on the desktop the menus don't show up with exception to the icons. I can't click any of these icons. I click on an icon on my desktop and it displays more icons, but I can't click on them. Almost makes me think there is something wrong with the nVidia driver not releasing the graphic from memory. Here's my system specs: AMD Sempron 2000+ ASRock K7VT6 Mobo w/ onboard USB, ethernet, and sound 512MB DDR3200 RAM 30GB HD (3 partitions: ext3, swap, and ext3) 80GB HD (FAT32) SONY DVD Burner nVidia GeForce MX 4000 w/ 128 MB RAM I built this system in December, so pretty much everything except the HD's are 6 months old. The BIOS of the nVidia is dated from (I think) July 2004. What's strange is I had this working in Ubuntu with their nVidia drivers, and SUSE. The driver is a deb package, not from nVidia's website. I'd rather have it be a deb package for ease of upgrading. I might wait for a new version to be available and then try again. Any other ideas? Thanks! |
have you considered using the official nVidia drivers? i cant think of anything else to try.

even with the official drivers, it's doing the same thing. it mentioned something about a rivafb being a module in the kernel, but I unloaded it and still nothing.

change the "nv" to "nvidia" in your XF86Config-4 file...also doesnt debian use xorg? if so then make a backup of your xorg.conf file (link) and rename your XF86Config-4 file to xorg.conf..thats what I did in Mandrake 10.1 with Xorg.
another thing to do could be to run xorgconfig and make a brand new xorg.conf file that way. |
I can just say that the problem is probably in 'udev' used by 2.6.x kernels.

Sorry for re-giving life to this old thread. If slayerboy (or anybody) is still here, can confirm the values
HorizSync 30-92 VertRefresh 50-85 are corrects for Daewoo 719B crt monitor? I searched the web but I only found it here. Many thanks to everyone who can answer to me. |
