Annoying beep on shutdown
Hi,
Occasionally when I shutdown Debian (squeeze) it does a really loud beep. I was just wondering what this might signify, where do I look to see what it means, and mainly how do I stop it ! Oh hardware is a Dell Latitude D620 Cheers Damian |
Try this: "How to turn off the annoying system beep in linux (Debian/Ubuntu)" - http://arsgeek.hubpages.com/hub/How-...x-DebianUbuntu

Thanks arochester,
That sounds like a good place to start. Unfortunately my debian partition is now totally borked :( for some reason yesterday I lost the ability to open readme files, so had to re associate them with gedit. Then this afternoon I lost the gnome desktop, well I had a desktop with some icons, but no bar at the top to run anything, luckily I had a terminal shortcut on the desktop so I tried to reinstall gnome, which went through ok with no errors. But after rebooting it I could not login to my profile at all, it just hung after entering my password. I then tried the recovery mode, and was able to log into gnome with root profile, but almost all programs failed to launch - giving some error about d-bus. The thing was I couldn't even bring up the network interface so couldn't try to reinstall those progs and dependencies, oddly the only things that seemed to work were apt-get and synaptic, but with no network they aren't a lot of good  So hay ho I am now running the net install again on a wiped partition and will try again ! Thanks for your help, I'm sure I will still need to do that fix afterwards ! Cheers Damian |
