ALSA startup

After

apt-get install alsa aumix && alsaconf

alsa starts up automatically at startup but does not load snd-intel8x0 and its other dependent modules

insmod snd-intel8x0 doesnt work either-->WHY?

modprobe snd-intel8x0 does however-->WHY? but insmod doesnt work?

Adding snd-intel8x0 to /etc/modules loads the correct modules on startup, but why do I have to do this when my other rollings of the distro on the same machine in different partitions but exact same setup do not require this modification (snd-intel8x0 is not present in /etc/modules).

Is there something I forgot from those last installations?
Additionally alsaconf is a lil different...doesnt let me pick the cards from a long list but lists the one (s) on my machine and doesn't do any extra configuring.

Is there a command I forgot, tried update-modules and the editor to add/remove modules from /etc/modules?

Thanx!

modprobe loads a module and all it's dependent ones,
insmod doesn't.. just the module.

Also install the alsa-utils package, gives the alsactl programme.

Modules are added to /etc/modutils/aliases, then run update-modules.
Alsactl adds new aliases to describe the sound system major and minor numbers and which module relates, eg if you have OSS compatability or not.
These are listed as..
[snip]
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore

##
## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)
## and then run `update-modules' command.
## Read alsa-driver's INSTALL file in /usr/share/doc for more info.
##
## ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
## alias snd-card-1 snd-ens1371
## OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
## alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
##

# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
## OSS/Free portion - card #2
## alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
## alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss
## alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.
options snd cards_limit=1
[/snip]
