ALSA only kind of works

Hello. I am running an ASUS A7N8X-X nforce2 motherboard along with debian. I tried getting sound to work using this description: http://xtronics.com/reference/Debian-sound.html However, it doesn't really work. It only sort of does. If I turn off the computer and turn it back on, i have to run alsaconf again before it will work. What can I do to get it to work without having to reconfigure?

I don't use debian but did you run alsa with su (root) command?
and then did you run a mixer command to raise the sound levels?

eg alsamixer

Your reboot issue suggests your settings on the volume level are not saving possible due to user login and not root?

I ran alsaconf as root. I don't think I used a mixer to raise the levels. aside from the volume control panel app. I didn't think any adjusting of the mixer settings were necessary. All of the volumes seemed to be about right.

Run 'alsactl store' after you have configured alsa. This will save the settings and restore them when you boot.
