allocate more memory?
 

hi crew
i been having a problem with my debian box caused when i used large amount of memory within my music software. at least this is what i think the problem is. thing is that when i start using large amounts of ram from sampling audio the system goes into a meltdown. the hard disk light flashes like crazy, X get really really slow, i a can hardly use my mouse, and sometimes X crashes completely and restarts. addmitedly, i think the gui for the software i am using is not the most effeicient, but i have used more cpu and memory using fedora with gnome. whereas here i am using fluxbox and debian.
could it be that there needs to be more memory allocated to X, if so how? or is there some other reason that could cause this crashing. i have tried finding bad sectors with smartmontools but it seems all is clean. i am totatally stumped. any suggestions welcome.

I think I know what you're talking about. I used to have a similar experience with kde. Every time I
pressed SHIFT+ENTER in konsole, konsole starts eating up memory endlessly, causing massive swap activity. After the swap space has been exhausted, the kernel ends up killing the process using it's clever victim selection process.

In your case, I think it is a bug in the application that is causing the problem. Maybe upgrade to a newer version. However, I don't think that the system should crash when it runs out of memory, at least not with 2.6.

It sounds to me like your swap is missing. Run top from the command line and see what it says you have for swap.

i have three different versions of the same prog new, not so new and the develment version. same thing.
