A little more detail please. What graphics drivers are you using? Intel onboard graphics, Nvidia or Ati? Are you using the default 2d opensource drivers or in case of ATI or Nvidia, the binary drivers provided by ATI or NVidia?

What is the error message you are receiving in X error log file?

i am using NVIDIA drivers there working correctly as the games used to work i have not changed any settings and i do get the NVIDIA splash when X is booted. My card is a NVIDIA Gforce4 MX440 with 128MB RAM. Where would i find the X error log? i looked in /etc/X11 could it be some where else?

First let me know the output of glxinfo (run glxinfo from a terminal window).

Then check the last few messages in the file .xsession-errors (note the leading dot) located in your home folder.

first unhandled event was glxinfo. I don't know why it says the last line i have been using this theme since first install.

If glxinfo crashes, it means that the display driver is badly misconfigured. Try re-installing the NVIDIA drivers.

I'm sure a major update to Xorg or any update to the kernel requires a recompile of the driver module.

LOL i have had a few system updates since my fresh install. so if my Xorg is upgraded thru system updates i would have to recompile the NVIDIA legacy drivers to suit? if so information in the selected updated package's discription should be given about this. maybe just a line that says Legacy drivers will need to be recompiled if this update is installed. thanks for the info i will get on this asap sounds like that is what has happend. urm just another quick question what do i type in a terminal to get non graphical login so i can recompile my drivers i know X connot be running but i forget how to do it? Just found the commands to stop X thanks for your help!!

Glad to be of help. When it's a problem like this, you should reinstall the graphics drivers. Simplest way. NVIDIA builds a custom kernel module to place its binary driver in the kernel, so a kernel update will require a driver reinstallation.
