After getting ATAPI cdrw to burn, can't read Debian Dist CD's

I successfully got my system to burn cds using my cdrw by including in lilo.conf the "append" line

append="hdc=ide-scsi"

this accomplished the required end of getting hdc recognized as a scsi device and allowed the burning of cd's.

But....
when I attempted to use apt-get to install a package from my set of Official Debian 3.0r3 CD's, which mount themselves automatically as needed, so long as they can do so at /cdrom, I get the following message

wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc, or too many mounted file systems
(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)

which, of course, it is, but how do I tell my set of Official Debian Linux 3.0r3's that they can't mount the cd using /cdrom?

Simple problem, but irritating.

Thanks,

Rusty
