ADSL Connection connected but can't ping any site?
Hi I tried installing debian sarge.
I pop in the cd and boot from it, then the first few screen it detect my network card and try to configure DHCP for it. It fail then I configure the network manually giving my pc a static 10.0.0.3 IP, Gateway is my Efficient 5660 bridge 10.0.0.1 and the ISP DNS server. After installing and booting from the base system, I execute a shell to configure my adsl using pppoeconf. It was successfully connected and I could see the IP given by my ISP. However, I could not ping any site, even my ISP DNS server. It said "Destination host unreachable, and beside it was the IP of my Gateway 10.0.0.1. What seems to be the problem? |
Have you specified the DNS addresses of your isp in /etc/resolv.conf

Even if its not specified, I suppose I can ping IP Address right? I can't! |
Can you ping 10.0.0.1? What response do you get from ifconfig?

do just ifconfig and tell us what you get.

All looks normal and I have no ideas. The only the other problem I have seen recently in regard to pppoe is a problem running ipv6. Check to see if the module is installed and perhaps remove it and see if that does not resolve the problem. Is your router configured via a browser and if so are you able to do configuration via the browser? Also have you installed a firewall?

Yes my router is configured via browser but currently I only have the base system installed, I can't access my router config. But given that my router is working fine in windows, the configuration doesn't really matters in linux right? I don't think firewall is installed cause I have yet to download any packages. |
As root do lsmod which will list the modules installed. I use the root command modconf for inserting and removing modules. This command should bring up a menu and then go down the list to kernel/net/ipv6 and select and then select ipv6 and it should have a + next to it. By selecting it, it should go through the removal process.
Technically the hardware of the router should handle the connection to the isp and you really only have to configure the pc network to connect to the router network so providing you have connectivity and can ping it nothing further needs to be done. |
Here is my lsmod.

btw, I'm surprised that theres so many modules loaded, is it normal? |
Try stopping the network /etc/init.d/networking stop and then try removing the module or you will have to go into single user mode using init1

Did you remove ipv6?
