Add more truetype fonts?

I've looked around and tried to locate where fonts are stored, but I can't really figure out how it's working. I'm until now mostly windows user, and in windows you just put your .ttf file in windows\fonts, thats it.

I've found some ttf files but I have more of them installed then what I find when I locate (e.g. times new roman). Does font's have to be registered someware?

Is there an easy way to install new fonts, and then they work in every program (maybe exept console and such)?

Check out the man page for xfs, and then check it's configuration file, usually /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config. You should find a list of paths that include the font files, but not all of them are TTF - some fonts are pcf format.

Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and /etc/fonts/local.conf. Add /path/to/fonts to each file. Simply reading through those two files will tell you how to edit them.

Then run "fc-cache -f -v" as root and restart your X server. Done!
