What environment variables do you have set? All you should really need is JAVA_HOME setup to point at the JDK you have installed and you also need $JAVA_HOME/bin on your path.

When eclipse fails to start what error messages do you get? Is there anything in the eclipse log file?

That depends a bit on your distrobution and whether you want the variables just set for you or for all users on the machine. If you want them just for you then you can put the setting of them in the file .bashrc (or maybe .bash_profile) in your home directory. For example, I have the following lines at the end of my .bashrc:

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/java/jdk
export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin

You could add similar lines to /etc/profile for these to be set for all users of the machine.

For you or all users

hi,

Not so strange,
What you ve done is for all users ( as an administrator), and what MassDosage proposed is for only you as a simple user!!

So it depends who you are and what you want to do

best regards
bela
