2.6.4 acpi patch for custom dsdt?

:Pengy:
Have tried to to use the vanilla kernel and acpi-dsdt-initrd-patch-v0.4-2.6.4.diff patch. Compiler went crazy with a few errors. Will try debian's patched 2.6.4 tonight along with acpi patch?

Question? Does debian have a patch that will let me to use one of those compiled dsdts for my inspiron 8200 with the kernel 2.6.4 or 2.6.2?

:scratch:Or anyone know of a patch that will work?

Made the switch to alsa, acpi, and 2.6.3 in one fell swoop by using bf24, configuring network, and jumping out before tasksel. changed sources.list and used Apt-get to death.:D:

Please, help!

As we say in church..."Thanking You In Advance" 2yr newbie

The patch worked w/o compilation errors. However I am extremely confused  as to which file I grab and where it is to be placed as well as configuring lilo and the initrd w/ its mkinitrd command. Have already enacted "apt-get install initrd-tools" and now that mkinitrd command is there. What do I do. I havent the urge to compile my own dsdt but dont know which to get the hex, .aml, or .asl. Do I compile the .asl with intels iasl utility and the extension make no difference or can i grab a fixed one and place it in its proper place, do the mkinitrd thing and configure lilo?

All of the functions are there; however, like battery which is being reported in KDE but certain events are screwy. The Lid event is caput. Dont want it to suspend or anything...just cut that durn screen and light out. cat /proc/acpi/.... shows all the requisite information. No problems there.

Or is it that i should tailor these events somehow?

Someone please help. The 8200 seems to be the linux model of choice for quite some time now so I know that there should be some support out there.

Did you notice the output in dmesg;

Dell Latitude with broken BIOS detected. Refusing to enable the local APIC.

Outabux 03-18-2004 11:00 AM

no apic

Should I then disable that feature during boot with something like "no apic" (I believe that acpi depends on apic for interrupts?) which I have tried but think I got syntax wrong?

Or should I disable that feature in the kernel altogether and recomplile or even add it as a module and let the kernel decide?

Or even place "no apic" or the proper synactic (is this a word?) statement in lilo and leave the kernel config as is?

Earlier, meaning 2.4.18, compiled kernels had it installed but would read the same but say that a "dummy apic" would be used.

Am not concerned with software suspend or the different sleep states (YET!), but would like the functionality of the lid to work. The button (shutdown) and battery works. I have i8kutils installed to handle (i8kmon)fans and will let either i8kbuttons or a utility that acpi map my other keys as F13...and so on. But that's another one.

I have been an apm man before but certain distros out the box (SuSe 8.2) wants it but not configured...

The kernel was successfully patched; I just dont know which dsdt to grab, compile it myself with iasl, or place the proper file in /boot and make an initrd for it and edit lilo to reflect that change (initrd = /boot/****.aml or .asl..., run lilo.

What gets me is that im extremely confused in making an initrd and the mkinitrd file. Do I "mkinitrd /path/to/file (or whatever)" and add it that lilo statement?

Am sorely confused as I have seen several implementations that promise good results, though mostly for 2.4.2X kernels.

Thanking U in advance, anyone, who can help:newbie:

You can try no apic and see if it makes a difference. I know there are problems with varous bioses. I have two comps here with msi m'boards of different vintages and one will work with apm i.e. shutdown and the other just doesn't work and both running the same kernel.

Outabux 03-18-2004 02:53 PM

How do i pass "no apic" into the kernel at boot?
I think thats what u are saying? should i first include Linux then no apic to look like "Linux no apic" or knoppix style "Linux noapic"

let me check other posts and then go to the Linux side.

I'll post ASAP relevent stuff (like if it works or not and pieces of dmesg and such)

THANX.

TigerOC 03-18-2004 03:36 PM

Its passed on the kernel line in grub or lilo

Outabux 03-19-2004 11:25 PM

Tried "append=no apic" and "append=noapic", besides noapic or no apic is in a later position during boot up.

In 2.4.X would get same answer but would show "dummy apic being used"

Inside lilo placed line "initrd=XXX", and got in dmesg as described "cannot find initrd"

As those kernel options that are needed for boot up, they are BUILT-IN and not modules...my scsi subsystem, ieee1394, & sound are not required for boot. There is a directory listed as /initrid but is empty.

On http://gaugusch.at/kernel.shtml, he details the process; but i don't understand the mkinitrd step. I have the mkinitrd tools installed. When running the command mkinitrd -o Dell.......asl i get some errors. Please help, for there isn't an initrd in my view and my mkinitrd step is lacking either the proper syntax, target, or something.

It would be of even greater help to point me to that persons email, as the link at the bottom of the page is dead.

Thank You Please Reply.

initrd is a ram disk image created while compiling the kernel If the kernel was not compiled with initrd then it will not boot with the initrd switch instruction. The initrd image is found in /boot. An example of creating a initrd.img is the compile instruction;
fakeroot make-kpkg --append_to_version -amdk7 --initrd \ --revision=rev.01 kernel_image
this produces a ram disk initrd.img-2.x.y-amdk7
wrt apic the convention is to add the line. See this doc;
http://www.users.fast.net/~eclectic/lilo.conf
Perhaps this problem needs the input of persons involved with laptops. Perhaps try posting in laptop section of justlinux.org

Outabux 03-20-2004 05:51 AM

Did you take a look at that url, it posts that the initrd can be recreated ova and ova to suit the dsdt and kinda shows how to use the .aml file (the corrected and compiled dsdt?) as the source of the initrd.

Thanks, I'll check that cite out.

Keep it comin fellas and fellettes, Oh Yeah!, take a look at that URL please...I believe that holds the key buy i cannot seem to decrypt it...it shows or tells how to create one when one is not there?

GOT IT!

N Guess What? My DSDT only had one warning and works better than those of the compiled ones. For Inspiron 8200/C840 family of laptops, I'm using M50 A15 (so I can use docking station)

Just added initrd=/boot/DSDT.aml to lilo.conf, ran lilo, and voila.

DSDT.aml was compiled from DSDT.asl downloaded from sourceforge.net using intel's iasl .

Hope this is of some use. CHECK OUT THAT URL: PERFECTION IN SIMPLICITY...luv KISS (keep it simple stupid)

THANKS.:Pengy:

No difference but removed apic / local apic from configuration.

what kind of problems were you having with the docking station? i also use the docking station with the inspiron 8200, and it absolutely hates being removed or un-suspended once it's plugged into the thing... something it used to handle gracefully under XP.

where did you get your alternate dsdt source? there is no C840 available on the DSDT homepage, only a C640. i'm not sure what "M50" indicates, either. the latest version of the bios for the inspiron is A11 (i'm using A10 at the moment). what problems did the new dsdt solve for you regarding the docking station?

thanks for any information.

Different Docking Station, C/Dock II

First of all my machine has a different BIOS on it to facilitate adding the C/Dock II. Its a larger docking station similar an inspiron's with the addition of a drive slot and two full length 3/4? height pci slots. The inspirons BIOS does not allow for this. It is flashed with the M50 A11 BIOS which reads C840 now, because I do not have a Quadro graphics card. When added, it will read M50.

Now this is the switch, for what its worth; when using iasl to check for errors with my dsdt, it reported one warning, BUT WORKED PRETTY GOOD I FOUND OUT LATER. I used one of those fixed dsdt's and closed my lid...lockup. The patch is still compiled in but I just use the one that's in there already...it works for what I've tried. When closing the lid and reopening, all i gotta do is hit Fn+F7, comes back on. The power button works out the box for clean shutdowns. Did use CPUDYN BUT SCREWY WITH ACPI AND ALSA SOUND.

Now, my system will no longer eject from the docking station in XP cleanly on my pro and home partitions. I believe it is a service patch thing. I could at once unplug it, then reattach and then eject, but keep getting 'cannot eject for a program is still using primary ide' ere something like that.

Thought it was systemworks, norton's protection on the drive but that's not it, though it was for removable drives.

Maybe try flashing your BIOS to C840 or M50:
If you use access direct, make sure its done now...it will switch the play and stop buttons. You wont be able to use the driver without tweaking it if you dont do it after ya got windows up n stuff. Also it will require a reinstallation of your graphics card.

Oh yeah, your computer will then say C840 and not inspiron 8200. And resplash your bootscreen cause i cant remember the switch to keep it.

Oh yeah M50 is the lattitude c840 with quadro card and pretty much souped up other stuff like top of line screen and hard drive and top of line price.

If your M50 cant handle the gl stuff or locks up they replace it with an inspiron board. Go to Dell's site and do a search. It also gives u a scsi card. They are really cheap on ebay...needed the BIOS for the dock to have different sound cards n stuff.

Got my dsdt from that page...but i think they are junk for my installation...mind u software suspend is not checked in my kernel config.

Essential programs remember their states and are there on startup. Whittle everything down to the minimum, stuff'l boot quickly enough.
