[Squeeze] Aptitude freezes whole system during download
Title says it all? I used aptitude in interactive mode. During the download screen the whole system froze.
What I did:
Hard resetted.
After first reboot I used dpkg --configure -a as prompted.
This time 'resumed' installation normally (tasks still in cahche).
Added some other packages. Froze again. Hard reset.
Realized it might be aptitude which is the cause. Aptitude->freeze->hard reset.
Two questions: How can I find out what's wrong? How can I ensure the packages I have installed now aren't corrupted?

Please help.

Very strange - I don't use aptitude in interactive mode - only cli mode - so I've never encountered anything like that. Were you running in a virtual terminal or in a main tty? Can you ping the hosts in your sources.list ok? Try the following:

aptitude clean
aptitude update
aptitude -f install
aptitude full-upgrade

Post any output.

Don't hard reset a frozen system, use "magic keys" first e.g:

(google it)

Thanks. I knew there were some magic keys, and it's much easier googling specific combinations. If you hadn't noticed: I'm kind of a newbie...
It appears I was wrong with blaming aptitude. Now Opera crashed. Maybe something in my ethernetcard? !@$! I just remembered I changed some BIOS settings pertaining to the PCI devices... I'm going to look into that.

Ouch, fixed
Turns out the whole drive I installed Linux on was old and broken. (I should have known.) This thread will give me a head start the next time something similar happens; Thanks for the replies.
