Question writing a configuration file + skype

one of my roommates uses an ancient computer, 78 (!) mb ram, 400mhz cpu, 4,3gb hdd. some stupid person installed win xp on his machine and obviously it didn't work. now i installed dsl 1.5 on his computer, works very well.

1) at startup there are several configuration questions to be answered (e.g. xvesa, screen-resolution). how can we avoid that? it surely is possible to write that information to a configuration file?

2) he wants to use skype. i downloaded the debian-version, 7,7mb, filetype .deb - but there's to file system browsers, with one i found the file, but couldn't open it, with another one i could browse folders on the left hand side, while there were never any files shown on the right hand side. can anyone explain me or show a link how to install skype on his machine?

i must apologize for asking questions that surely are documented another place, but i have to prepare for my last exam and am going on christmas vacation to my home-country for a month next week. so i hope to become more efficient by letting you kind people help me...
