wpasupplicant on DSL?

I am using DSL from a USB flash drive and am trying to get online using my wireless card. (I am able to get online with eth0.) I have 2 different wireless netowrk cards (wpc54gs & wpc11 v 4) and I have been trying both of them. Following the directions on this page

# ndiswrapper -i net8180.inf

# insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/misc/ndiswrapper.o

I am able to get to the point where i need to use wpasupplicant. unfortunately i cant seem to install it. using MyDSL panel i installed dsl-dpkg but when i try to 'apt-get update' or 'apt-get install wpasupplicant', i get the error:

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (2 No such file or directory)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

I am root (i tried running apt both with sudo and as root user) and as far as I can tell using ps, I am not running any other apt or dpkg process.

Can anyone help? either with apt or possibly suggest another method to install wpasupplicant or a way to get online without wpasupplicant?

adding to my frustration, i am unable to post to the DSL forums

thanks any help you can give!
