Question Why when installing, DSL-Embedded is asking for IPHLPAPI.DLL file?

Hello:

Using Windows 95 currently and trying to install DSL-embedded. But when clicking on the .bat install, DSL-embedded is asking for IPHLPAP.DLL file. Does anyone know where I can get a 95 version of it? Tried copying the file from my Win 2000 pc and didn't work.

Can DSL-embedded be started somehow at the dos prompt? My Bios won't boot from CDROM so had to copy the DSL-embedded from CD to hard drive in Windows.

I don't think you could install Linux by copying CD on the hard drive and running from there. I never saw anybody doing it. Why you can't boot from BIOS? Is it because there is no BIOS option to force CD-ROM booting (I doubt it, unless your BIOS is from prehistoric times), or because your CD is not bootable. If it is the last one, then you need to get a new CD.

My BIOS does not recognize my CDROM at all. Only when Win 95 loads is when it is accessible. This is why I cannot use the CD to boot. I tried Loadlin, but it's useless. The Linux program keeps looking at the vmlinuz file and says it doesn't have the correct compressed format. Was trying to go the route of Embedded DSL, but now it's asking me about this error now "dnsapi.dll is linked to missing kernel32.dll interlockedcompareexchange". I'm about to just give up on the old 95 machine as far as linux is concerned. Biggest problem is I only have 8mb on the board so I can't even upgrade to win98 if I wanted to.

It sounds that you have very ancient hardware, and event though Linux would have ran on it, but since there is no way to install, we will never know. From what I remember, there is no much difference between Win95 and Win98, the first true multitasking was implemented on Win2000. Recently I got rid off few old PC's, there is no point of keeping them and solve problems for obsolete devices and crappy OS's, as far as I am concern.

Progress... Sort of...

I think I could've gotten it to work eventually, but figured it wasn't worth the time trying to install without a CD Rom bootable disc. Instead I took the hard drive out of the older Win 95 machine and just connected it as a master on a slightly newer pc (Pavilion that had 98 hee hee hee). Anyway, loaded up a Gparted disc to put about 2 or so partitions on it. Rebooted with the DSL boot disk. Installed the DSL, then just took it out and put it in the Win 95 PC. The kernel booted right up. Only problem is because it has only 8mb of ram on the board, it won't display the DSL desktop. Only brings be to the command line. Don't have any old ram chips laying around. Is there anyway to open up the DSL desktop with this limited memory? I saw some posts somewhere that said some people actually ran DSL with only 4mb of ram? I know it's going to be slow as heck, but hey, its just for my kids to play around with. It's either that or windows 95... (NOT!!!). Something in the video setup probably?
