What are Steps to Install to USB HD?

hi all, what are the steps required to install DSL on a hard drive attached via usb (not a usb pen drive!)?

it is a win95 laptop hard drive that won't load due to win95 errors. i want to reformat the drive to run dsl. i removed the hd and put it in a usb enclosure. i then attach this enclosure to my main computer.

1. i will use mepis' qtparted to partition the usb drive.

1a. i'm not sure if i need a dsl specific partition scheme. should i partition a /, /home and swap partitions? if not, what partition strategy should i use?

2. run the cd live version of dsl.

3. find out the partition name (sda1 for the linux pre-partitioned drive on mepis). how do i find out the partition structure of the hd attached via usb using dsl tools? i have mepis' gui figured out, but i'm not very familiar with dsl's gui.

4. install dsl to the root partition. click install to hard drive, i think i have to type in the name of the root partition of the usb attached hard drive... and answer any follow up questions.

is there anything else i need to know? also, i mentioned in #3 that i'm not familiar with dsl's apps and how to mount, unmount and view partitions. i'd appreciate some help in this area.

thanks in advance...

i went ahead and partitioned the h/d using mepis' qtparted. i have a 256mb swap and a 1700mb root partition. i skipped out on a home partition for this project.

i was able to partition the hd successfully, although i was forced to use ext2.

i ran the dsl live cd and clicked on install to hd. i input /dev/sda2 as the destination drive. i was asked about a multi-user setup. yes. i was then asked if i wanted to use ext3. no. i was then asked to verify i wanted to continue. yes.

the program started running for a second or so and then it abruptly ended w/o any feedback at all.

i guess i'll try the usb pen install to see if it will work on a hd attached via usb.

i don't think this will work. i will try a network / floppy install next.
