Trying to get YIM/MSN working...HDD Install

Alright, so I'm running an old Compaq Deskpro with a Pentium 2 processor, about 50mb RAM and a stock mobo. Recently I did a hard-drive install of DSL,and then enabled Apt-Get. I then proceeded to install the version of gAIM that the woody version of apt-get, and voila, MSN and YIM don't work. MSN gives a protocol error and YIM just doesn't connect. Any ideas how I could get YIM and MSN working via different programs or plugins or what not?
