trouble accessing other files on usb
I have installed dsl on a 512 flash drive. I installed it to a blank flash drive and then syslinux'ed it. I tried booting and it worked great. I then added a "my storage" folder so i could still save misc. stuff. I tried mounting everydrive(just in case i missed sumptin) while i was in dsl and never seen the actual files as they are on my drive. how do i navigate to the usb drive so i can view my storage folder. thanks in advance.

Anybody have the answer to this? I have the same problem.

Did you run fdisk -l?
That should show you what the "everything" is that you should try mounting. How did you 'add a "my storage" folder'? That should give a hint as to where it is "hiding". |
I already had that folder on the drive when i syslinux'ed it in windows. I just wanted it there so when created a document, i could just save it in that folder but i will try that and let you know if it works. Thanks for the reply

I've never syslinux'ed anything, any chance it destroyed your folder?

I am sure that the file structure is the same.

How can you be sure that "the file structure is the same" when you can't find the missing folder?

Have you tried just making a new one? And BTW, which is more important here -- "solving the problem" or learning how to "untie the knot"? (See my sig...) |
ok, let me walk through step by step what I did. I had a 256mb flash drive which I used for misc things. I then decided i wanted to put DSL on it cause it seemed very interesting. So I deleted every folder on the drive EXCEPT my storage folder. I then downloaded the DSL files and then proceeded as instructed to install DSL on the flash drive. The filesystem is fat32 so when i plug in on a windows machine, I see ALL the files and folders the DSL put on but I ALSO see my original "my storage folder" that was on it b4 I installed DSL. I then restarted my computer and booted of the flash drive. I got to the desktop and was trying to mount the flash drive so I could navigate to "my stoarge folder" so I could save stuff but while examinening the file structure on the flash drive all I can see are the normal linux folders like, home, bin, mnt and so on. So my question is if there is a way to get acess to that folder("my storage" folder)? And I have done it on 2 different flash drives and same thing occurs. I hope that makes it alittle more clear but Im sorry for the confusion.

Now the big Q: When you look at the USB drive this way, what do you see at the top level? Perhaps 2 folders? 1 called "my storage folder", & the other called something like "DSL"? On the other hand, when you boot DSL you don't see the folder that holds DSL, do you? Just its contents as the root (/) directory, right? If these guesses of mine are correct, then you probably need to move "my storage folder" inside the DSL folder when DSL isn't booted, you could also create a link (Lin) or shortcut (Win) where the full folder used to be. I hope this will solve your problem, if you want to "untie the knot", then before you fix the problem, boot DSL & post the output from fdisk -l. |
