rescue ntfs files

Can I use DSL to copy files from an xp drive to a usb drive or a second hard drive, then copy them back after doing a reinstall of xp? Would the hard drive need to be ntfs formatted or just fat? I"ve been told DSL is ntfs read only.

It's read-only, but you only need to read the files to copy them.
After you get XP reinstalled you can copy the files back using XP. The drive onto which the files are first copied needs to be either fat or fat32 (the only file systems that both DSL and XP can use natively...DSL to write, and XP to read). If you have long filenames, you're limited to only fat32.

Another option is using ext2 or 3 as the middleman, and get an XP application which can read these file systems.
