Putting my DSL laptop to sleep

I've got an insomniac Thinkpad T21 and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. ;)

The hard drive install is 1.3.1 but I have a full archive of DSL CDs from 0.43 to 4.4.10.

It's not a huge issue, but it would be fun to be able to tinker with it here and there when I have a few minutes instead of having to wait until I have time to boot it up and then shut it down.

I'm also more accustomed to desktops and habitually put my other laptops to sleep or hibernate them when they aren't in use to protect them from wear and tear, but might just need a pat on the head and a more experienced laptop user to reassure me about how much uptime is not too much wear and tear for the grand old gal.

TIA

add to your kernel line resume=<<swap_partition>>
this will allow your laptop to hybernate when battery is empty
