probably nice distro; stupid name

Is anyone else irritated by the name of this distribution (which I am still cheerfully going to try soon)? I'm not being a prig about swearing here, but the name makes me wince for its sounding like a joke. The indelible first impression is that the designers don't take their product seriously. Even "Gnoppix" isn't as ridiculous. If they can squash a future version to an even smaller size than 50 MB, will they name it "F**kingSmallLinux?"

I accept my wrongness in advance, and apologize for offending everybody. Please flame me! You are my superiors!

Feel free to create a "DarnSmallLinux" fork

Seriously, tho, is "damn" really considered a swearword? To me, "Damn" in this context is every bit as acceptable as "Really" or "Very" would be.

Some interesting history on this: The project leader, famous actor Jean-Claude VanDamme, was afraid that if he named it Dammesmalllinux then nobody would be able to find it on the web. Also, people were misprouncing it as "dame" and nobody could get it correct. After much consideration (see beacoup forum threads on it) he finally gave in to pressure from the other devs and called it damnsmalllinux.

I hope not, because this can only lead to confusion with another DSL-based distro developed by the son of the late blues guitarist Freddie King. He already has his website up on http://fkingsmalllinux.org

LOL. I use the distro from time to time it has some real potential. No jean claude didnt make it. The name was cute when it was a cult probably, but it is more main stream now and going places; and I think it should get a name change IMO.

over at distro watch you can see they had an interview with the designers of DSL. they're trying to get in on the african $100 laptops.

i can just see it now in the new york times..."damn small linux on 100 dollar laptop for poor children in africa "ROFLZ!

bye for now.

A laptop somewhere costs $100.00? What's it made of, grass? I'd buy one if I didn't think there was a reason it costs that.

And if an actor made his own Linux distribution, it would be called IHateBushLinux, EgoLinux, or MeMeMeLinux.

Well, DSL doesn't have OpenOffice, does it?--I assume not, because that would make it impossible to be Damn Small. I demand OO, but I guess I don't mind if DSL lacks it, because I assume I can install DSL to my HD and then install whatever I want.

I have seen RTFM explained as "read the fine manual".
I suppose you are as free to explain DSL as "Darn Small Linux" or anything else you choose.

I had my Groklaw acount "frozen" supposedly because of the word "damn" in my contact email address. This was, of course, after I disagreed with a Linspire/Freespire article. I discovered my posts were only available when logged on and not otherwise. I asked that my account be deleted and do not participate there anymore.
So is "damn" considered a swearword?

Yes it is a swear word. In the old days, mother's would wash your mouth out with soap for saying it.

Despite the fact that we see so much of it on tv, news, radio, is to me, not an indication that we are not getting better, smarter. It shows me a decline in our society.

Just imagine a small child saying give me "damn fork mom"!

Yes, what that Old Fogie says is absolutely true. I'm in my late 50s, and I was the youngest. My dad was born (in England) in 1899; Mum in 1906. As a child and right through my teens (in Canada), we would never THINK of saying any of:
—damn
—hell, or
—shit
which were all considered honest-to-goodness, full-fledged swearwords. You could add "bloody" to that list, depending where you lived. Oh, and "blast it!" was considered foul, almost a swearword. Maybe it has something to do with "blasphemous"; I don't know.

Those influences were not backward. I grew up with a good command of the language, and the ability to use tough language sparingly but effectively, so I'm happy with my upbringing.

There have been a few very nice freeware apps with far-out names that don't do them any good. Once everybody's had their giggle, what's the point? It gets old very soon.

I think Linux Scintilla would be more endearing and more enduring.
IMHO. ;-)

I'm all for that, except Scintilla Linux sounds nicer than Linux Scintilla.

Heh, I don't mind the name, it's a good product. And I think they were taking it seriously when they chose the name. But the developers are probably young and humorous. Swearing is now common amongst the youth, many teen cartoons contain excessive swearing such as South Park, lol they make Damn look like a clean word.

Would be funny to see MS come out with a "fun name" like that.. such as Windows KickA$$ Edition instead of Vista.

Just my opinion.

Most or all of those phrases such as "blast it" may have been considered swear words, but they were meant to be technically non-blasphemous euphemisms for the real swear words.
