New to DSL
 

Hey DSL guys, thought I'd give DSL a try and see if it was easier to set up than mandrake.

My Problem:

I was trying to setup Mandrake 9.2 for webserver purposes. My goal was to have mysql, http, ssh, scp and a few other servvices running. I wanted it to be very low weight, as its quite an old system. P3-450 128mb. 4gig hard drive. I wanted to have the machine set up with out a keyboard and monitor, just wanted to be able to ssh into the machine.

Well it was possible for me to ssh into the machine, but Im guessing I didn't install enough things (for lack of a better word) to rpm installs successfully. Cause I couldn't install the http apache server, but I had some advanced extranet thing on it, I didn't want. So now I have to reinstall Mandy with more appropriate tools install, and possible KDE as I am not too great with all the command line utilities.

However, as I was browsing through this forum like usual, i thought I'd check out and see what DSL was all about.

So my final question is, can I get DSL to always boot from the cd and run (incase the power goes out or something) and run those services mentioned above? and is it possible to have it load an htdocs folder and a mysql database from a harddrive?

What do you mean by DSL? If all you want is a web/sql server that you can ssh into then you really don't need KDE or any gui. If you want a gui for ease of administration then you should go with Gnome. That's just an opinion but I think Gnome has more admin tools available.

thanks for the reply jeempc. What did I mean by DSL? I meant, is it possible to have a preconfigured bootable CD that does web/sql etc. And if there isn't a prefconifgured bootable CD like such, how difficult is it to get DSL to run those services? Thanks.

I am sorry for the confision. I assumed you were talking about the DSL as in the Internet technology. Then I looked up and noticed DamnSmallLinux. OOps.
