Here's my problem:

I have an old laptop in my apartment running DSL that I use as a web server. I'm using Apache for the web server, and the built-in ftp daemon and the built-in ssh daemon.

I have ports 20, 21, 22 open on my router.

I have a static ip address.

I can get the website just fine when I bring it up in a browser.

I can connect to the computer through ssh.

I can log in to the ftp server.

BUT

When I try to get a directory listing I'm confronted with the following error message:

"421 Unable to accept data connection. Service unavailable."

It seems like DSL keeps closing the connection on me. Does anybody know if DSL has some ftp config file that I have to fiddle with?

Once again, I managed to find a solution myself. I thought to myself, "Self, if you can login using ssh, why not try logging in using sftp?"

It worked like a charm. I guess there were permission problems going through regular ftp that were resolved once I went through sftp.
