Keyboard Number Lock not working and a terminal emualtion program needed

I am a newbie to Linux and would really apprciate some advice on a rather annoying problem I've encountered.

Background:

I have to re-certify my CCNA so I bought a quantity of old PCs on eBay to set up a practice network at home

The PCs are IBM PC300GL Desktop Intel Celeron 366Mhz, 64Mb RAM, 4.2Gb Hard Drive (search eBay in Australia to see some for sale)

As I have a philisophical objection to adding to the evil empire's already swollen coffers, I decided to find a Linux distro I could run on the PCs.

I tried a few and settled on DamnSmallLinux (DSL) for two reasons - it's size (or rather lack of it) and it had a GUI.

(Dealing with Cisco routers, switches etc I'm no stranger to CLI type interfaces but I do prefer GUI's)

I have to admit to being quite chuffed at getting DSL to install OK to my HDD the first time I tried. Just followed the instructions on the DSL site.

DSL is up and running. It recognises the two ether cards in the PC and will talk to the network and the Internet via both.

Current Problem:

I can't get the number pad to work in a terminal session.

My studies will require me to type in a goodly number IP addresses and as I am firmly wedded to the practise of using the number pad for this, it is going to be a real pain in the rear end if I have to use the number keys above QWERTY keys to do so.

Does anyone know how to activate the number lock (and hence hopefully the number pad) in DSL?

I will also need a terminal emulation progrm with the functionality of "Hyper Terminal". Is there one out there and how do I install it?

I think your problem with the num pad not working has to do with your terminal settings. as far as hyperterminal alterantive goes I used to use minicom. (http://alioth.debian.org/projects/minicom/)

Thank you very much for the assistance.

I've checked the terminal settings and it doesn't appear to be that as the number pad doesn't work in DSL itself either.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated
