Help in configuring a Lucent Winmodem
I am having problems configuring my Lucent Win Modem for dial-up in the live-cd version of DSL. I've read somewhere that it will only work in windows, is this true?

Winmodems need special drivers to work under linux because they are so-called software modems; the cpu will have to do the work. Contrary to hardware modems, which have their own chip and do not require any drivers.
To check whether a driver for you winmodem is available, see http://linmodems.org But it may give more trouble than it's worth... You might consider buying a (second-hand) external hardware modem. Look for 'Hayes compatible'. This will work directly, no fuss. |
DSL may be seeing the modem
You cannot count all linmodems as bad. My Toshiba lappy with a Lucent winmodem works fine with DSL. When the CD is booting watch the hardware detection so see if DSL actually sees the modem (mine has different color to the font as it recognizes the modem) If hardware detection is not picking it up, you will have to scramble.
