Linux Newbie here.

It seems the articles all assume knowledge in Linux for me to install to HD within a VMWARE (I switched hard drive to IDE as suggested).

After many readings here is what I'm trying.

CFDISK
hda1 primary Linux Swap 256 Meg
hda2 boot primary linux ext3 8 Gig

mkswap /dev/hda1
swapon /dev/hda1

I run dsl-hdinstall and when asked to reboot nothing happens.

Desperate I try again a different way.
I reboot again and select F2 and dsl tohd=/dev/hda2

This seems to work
Copying dsl image to dev/hda2
and then it boots from cd

It's configured to run from CD so I boot again going into bios to boot from Hard drive but it does not work.

What am I not understanding here?

DSL can be a little flakey when installing to hard drive. I haven't been able to get it to work without quite a bit of hassle. I think the main problem is getting your virtual hard drive set up right beforehand, and then getting grub installed to the mbr. If you think the install has happened ok already, and it's just a bootloader problem, then here is a possible solution. Download this iso, set it as the cdrom image, install grub, unset it as the cdrom image. Install grub. Reboot, and hope.

I switched from LILO to Grub and it worked first try.
