FromHD Install Old Laptop X server errors
Hello All,
I want to run DSL on an old laptop (P1, 1.4 GB HD, 16 MB RAM) currently running Tiny Linux. I cannot boot from the cd so I figured out a way to mount a zip drive in Tiny and copy the Knoppix filesystem over to a small FAT32 partition (hda3). Then I use the DSL boot floppy to boot up and choose: Quote:
When I arrive at run level 2 I get an error saying something about not finding a ramdisk in fstab or something else (it goes by too fast). But the process continues until run level 5 where I see: Quote:

If you are getting to run level 5 then the next step should be to run x desktop..bit of a noob myself but did you try adding dsl xsetup to your boot...this may run xsetup at the point in question and ask a few questions related to mouse vid settings and keyboard..if answered correctly it should then boot x desktop... if you have a reasonable swap file then ram is not so much an issue..I am running a hdd install non frugal on a pent166 with 32 meg ram and a swap file...the swap has to be ON ...may question the fat32 but not sure..hope you get up and running...dsl is much nicer than tiny in my opinion.

I finally got my RAM upgrade (a big 40MB total laughable). And now X seems to work. I get past runlevel 5 and some kind of display comes up. But it is weird-all the colors seem reversed. Where it should be white it is black so everything is really dark.
Anyone have a thought about this? Thanks for all previous responses! And future ones too. |
try xvesa setup, and set ur display to 800x600 16 bits ;) try this

For some reason I can only run X-setup not xvesa. In x-setup I have tried these values but no luck.
Are xsetup and xvesa different? I am confused. |
