DSL hebrew support
 

As I've mentioned in a previous post - I want to install linux on a pentium II with 128 mb of ram.

After downloading dsl and running it on my own comp, I decided it really is my favorite dist for the task.

My question, however is regarding language support. The computer will be mainly used to play mp3 files and for writing documents.
I'm planning to install DSL on the hard drive, in order to install Open Office.
The main user will be a 14 year old, that will need Hebrew support - both for writing and reading.

I'm not familiar enough with Fluxbox, so i don't know how well it even supports other languages - I'm not even sure how to install different keyboard layouts and how to switch between them. :confused:

u might want to ask on the damn small forum,from there webpage,not saying no one here couldnt answer,it just might be easier n quicker.

You can download and install the culmus fonts they'll allow you to see hebrew in the browser, I can use them in kde but I don't know about Fluxbox as acidburned said you can try the DSL forums.

I'm afraid fluxbox doesn't have a Hebrew translation yet (see this page). Although I'm not really sure what the the translations are for; the menu is read from a text file, so you could put Hebrew in the menu I think...

For changing the keyboard layout see IGLU's page (Although for some reason the shift toggling doesn't seem to work on my box, alt works fine though). Keyboard layout is controlled by the X server so it doesn't matter whether you're using fluxbox or KDE. Typing right to left is on a per application basis though, and I don't use Open Office, so I can't help you there.

I think you can do this piece by piece if you are willing to try. And then you can send what you did in to the devs on various projects and Hebrew support might be available to other people.

Fluxbox uses a simple menu which the user can edit. If you can get Hebrew working in a text editor like VI or Emacs or which ever one you want, you can configure your own menu. The menu is simple and you can see and modify it easily. The default Fluxbox menu is saved in /usr/X11R6/share/Fluxbox/menu. All you have to do is translate some of the headings to Hebrew....the names of the programs will stay the same.

The other features of Fluxbox are all configured through themes. It's the same as with menus: just edit the themes and translate to Hebrew whatever you want.
