Cannot install boot loader

I've been using for a while dsl 3.4 on my Toshiba Libretto 110 ct and everything worked fine. When I decided to upgrade dsl to 4.1 I popped out the hard disk from the laptop, but I broke PIN 1 of the ide connector. The disk still works normally but when I try a hard disk install, the process always stops in the boot loader installation phase. The PIN 1 of an ide connector is the ground, is'n it? Is this problem due to the hardware failure or is it just a problem of this release of damn small linux? Thanks.

It's the HW. What? You thought the gnd pin was there for decoration? Anyway, pin 1 is not ground, it's "-RESET".
"ground" is pin 2 (amongst others).
