Can't load DSL into VM Player -- Error

Running Win XP with SP 2. Installed VM Player windows and then (damnsmallinux) DSL for VM Player.
When I click "DSL3.4.2" within the VM Player I get the Error:
"Error while opening the virtual machine: The configuration file for this virtual machine cannot be found. It might be missing from the virtual machine directory, or the path specified to access this virtual machine might be incorrect.

Configuration file: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 2 for dsl-3.4.2-vmx.zip\dsl.vmx.
"

I tried to build the directory path but I can get all the way down to \Temp directory but cannot make a long directory name: " Temporary Directory 2 for dsl-3.4.2-vmx.zip\dsl.vmx. " to place the dsl config file dsl.vmx in the proper directory ???
Help appreciated.
Paul

ok, two things.

first, and most importantly, DO NOT use your temp directories for keeping things in. a temp directory is used for temporary storage (i.e. when installing programs, often the installer is put in the temp directory so the installer runs from the hard drive, allowing you to swap cd's). temp directories can be emptied at any time with impunity. have you recently done a "disk cleanup" or similar, usually that will empty the temp dirs.

secondly, it looks like you are double-clicking on a zip file to open it, then running the file conained within. this usually doesnt work. right click on the file, and choose "extract files" to extract all the contained files into a shiny new directory, then run them from inside the shiny new directory.

hope this helps.

btw, you *do* need to google for vmware support, the problem you are having is a vmware/windows problem, windows cannot find the file, dsl isnt even running yet.
