can't boot from CD on my old 486
Because I heard that DSL was very likely to run on ancient computers, I tried running the liveCD on my roughly twelve-year-old 486, really just to see if I could. Unfortunately, the system configuration on the machine does not seem to allow for using the CD drive as the first boot option; it only offers floppy drive and hard drive. Any ideas on how to make it boot from the CD anyway?

You could use the boot manager from http://sourceforge.net/projects/btmgr to boot from a floppy into the cd.
