am helping to setup a computer lab in W Africa for next two days, and have been using Luit Linux (based on DSL). systems are as follows:

266mhz cpu
64mb ram
3gb hd

I have Luit Linux up and running and am VERY impressed with the robustness of the DSL package given the small form factor. Very Good Work!

My need is for native french language support on the desktop and apps if possible (if not, the locals find english rather exotic so it will probably work).

Also, can a compiler be installed easily with apt-get so that programming classes can be taught?

Try Mandrake. Mandrake is a French company so they probably have the best French Linux support.

Yes. Install gcc. If you switch to Mandrake then gcc will be on the install CD.
