Cant get nvidia drivers to install

I used synaptic to get alsa and alsa-utils and alsa conf all installed. But when i go to run alsaconf its saying command now found. I cant find where its got them installed but if i run apt-get install alsa-utils it tells me ive got the latest version installed already.
I thought i was done with my sound troubles but this is just as bad as before.

solved this one as per below.

nm, got the module installed manually.
For some reason though i had to do /sbin/modprobe snd-via82xx instead of just being able to do modprobe
I have a feeling if i knew where alsa installed and type /pathtoalsaconf/alsaconf it would have worked too.

Oh well, now on to getting the nvidia driver working. When i try install the driver from the nvidia site it goes through a bunch of steps then finally fails because of something with gcc-version.

gcc-version-check failed:
Could not compile gcc-version-check.c

If you know what you are doing and want to ignore the gcc version check, select "No" to continue installation. Otherwise, select "Yes" to abort installation, set the CC evironment variable to the name of the compiler used to compile your kernel, and restart the installation. Abort now

to be exact

Alsaconf

Mead:

If you are looking for the location of an executable, try the 'whereis'command:

> whereis alsaconf

/usr/sbin/alsaconf

-cjl
