Mandriva....is that like mandy the diva?
Well it is official Conectiva 10 is that last Conectiva branded distro to circulate. Now Mandriva is going to make us join the club if we want to use their linux OS. Sigh Well there are plenty of other distros to use should this no longer fit the bill. Thorn Now I know how redhat users feel.  |
Yea, the American English users tend to slide into a Mandrival, Mangina, Mandriver cognate session. It's a piss poor name, but luckily you have choices beyond Mandriva if you so choose.

http://www1.mandrivalinux.com/en/ftp.php3 - it seems that you can still download without having to join the Club, as you ever could. Urpmi should still work and I'd guess that the EasyUrpmi sites will still operate.
|
You have never *had* to join the club to use Mandrake, and with Mandriva it looks like that will still be true.
|
I know you don't have to Join the club but free OS is always buggier then the Club OS.
|
Not by my experience. ;)
And if you look, you will see that the Official Edition is the same, whether you download the free version, or buy the 4-CD set. They are identical, minus a few proprietary apps that you can download and install yourself, anyway. Heck, by setting up and using your urpmi repositories correctly, the download version is the same as the Powerpack (6-CD) version! |
Well Padma,
All I can say is that your milage is much different then mine. |
I'm quite sure padma is correct...
|
To be honest, I find the perfpomance of 10.1 Download Commercial Edition, upgraded via urpmi to 10.1 Official Edition, works better for me than the 10.1 OE Powerpack that I have.
I can't explain it, I just enjoy it. :) |
All I can say to that is:
Different Strokes for different folks. I was planning on setting up a LAMP server using Conectiva. But since the distro is effectively discontinued I am now going to use FreeBSD. The good thing is I can use Webmin to administer the box. Oh well I can still use Conectiva for a client if I want to. Thorn |
