New user has VERY slow update in progress

I am just finishing my Conectiva install and have began to update the system. The Synaptic window is showing 13 of 27 files being retrieved but one is the kernel update and it is taking about 7 hours to finish. transfer rate of a 14 meg file is at 1336 b/s. Is there a way around this update. I am new to the entire you/rpm/yast thing so any help would be appreciated.
