CL 10 Beta1 CD1 - Comments

Just wanted to thank all Conectiva Linux Staff for releasing this "BEAUTAAAAFUL!!!!!" distribution!!!!

I am not a hardcore linux user, but a user who likes to try all sorts of distro's just for fun...(Have tried all the majors, some of smaller ones...)

Connectiva has always crossed my mind as a latin based distro, thus i didnt have the mojo to go all out and actually try it.

But after trying CL 10 Beta 1 CD1 via Bittorrent, i can surely say i was amazed!!!!

Its Beautiful! Professional Beauty that is. It is not like some of the super artistic themes at kde-look.org... (dont get me wrong i love fun eye-candy as well). But a professional good looking desktop is what is needed in order to break in to business/office desktop world.

I think you guys got the right idea...

As for the Beta OS itself, so far i have just encountered 2 "problems" which is not major in any way...

1. CL didnt seem to get my mouse scroll features right. But this was a simple fix in the XF86Config-4 file... (just had to change the IMPS/2 protocol)

2. CL coundlt pick up my sound cards? (C-Media integrated audio and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz PCI card) However ALSA seemed to be installed, but this doesnt bother me since it is Beta 1

***UPDATE*** i was able to manually load the modules via rc.local file. the modules are present just didnt autoload. aside from that i also installed the enterprise kernel with nvidia drivers and loaded nvidia and ntfs modules as well.

Overall i think CL 10 will be a VERY nice distro!!!! but there are still a few things you guys can improve appon.

The Good!
===============
- Professional "good looking" consistent theme (KDE 3.2)
- Menu was well organized and EASY to navigate
- Boot up gives options to start in X11 or console mode (to install nvidia drivers, etc.)
- APT works as expected

Things that can be fixed
================
- Aside from the 2 minor problems from above
- During "gui" install, the fonts... were a bit ugly/small/ hard to read
- The login screen needs to replace i think 1 or 2 latin words (convert to english). should be a quick fix.

Things to be *wished for
================
- North American APT repositories?
maybe there is already some that i was unable to find, but if someone knows about it please let me know!!! thank you.

Other than that, CL was great! Thank you once again.

Scroll? it selects mouse, as Microsoft IntelliMouse (PS/2) functions in the majority of the cases.

Microsoft IntelliMouse (PS/2) = IMPS/2

Apt repositories ??

https://moin.conectiva.com.br/mirrors

i nice repository is the rpmfind...

rpm http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/conectiva/ snapshot/i386 all

snapshot is brought up to date daily, and generally the betas are mounted on it.

Im having much the same problems as you. Neither my scroll wheel or my sound are working.

hey mead,

mouse wheel: edit your XF86Config or is it XF86Config-4 file... i cant remember which one since im not on my machine.

goto the mouse section, and change the protocol to "IMPS/2", your hardware may be different so it might not work. if it doesnt post back with your XF86Config file.... and will c what we can do.

sound: u will manually need to load the sound modules at boot up. its easy if* u know ur sound card modules name. goto alsa's website and find your sound card.

then, edit our /etc/rc.local file and just place

modprobe THE_MODULE_NAME_HERE

ie.

modprobe i810_intel

during boot up, CL will read the rc.local file and load the modules.

to see what modules are currently loaded, you can type in the console:

/sbin/lsmod

as root of course.

Ok, the mouse is working right now. Thanks much.
The sound however is a little harder. The alsa site didnt list my sound card. Its built in sound using the via vt8237 chipset.
I found drivers for them on vias website, but the install instructions for them arent working so im not sure how to get the module installed so i can make the rc.local thing load it.
Im using a MSI K8T Neo motherboard which is a Via K8T800 chipset.
Any ideas on what i need to do?

glad ur mouse is working.

well, the best thing i can recommend for your sound card is to search in the forums... for any1 else who may have the same sound chipset as you. u can also search for the same motherboard, but if you come up empty as long as the guy has the same chipset it will be fine.

the only thing im concerned here is that the ALSA modules that caame precompiled with CL, may not have your modules, thus you may have to compile ALSA yourself. and i dont personally recommend it if your new* (feel unfortable) with source/install.

but basically as long as you know the module name, and CL has them precompiled you should be able to load it in /etc/rc.local without and problems.

GL.
