low resolution although high selected

I have installed college linux with kde 3.1.4.
I set my monitor LG 700s and set resolution to 1152*864 with 78 Hz. But i think resolution is 800*600 when i compared to my previous linux installations. How can i set it to real 1152*864?

Monitor: Lg 700s Hf=30-70kHz Hv=50-160kHz
Video card: Geforce 2 mx 400 (Generic vesa is seen)

I choose 1024 X 758, followed by 800 X 600 but slackware 9.1 kde desktop appear as 800 X 600 instead.

I am having a very similar issue. I have slack 9.1 on a dell poweredge w/Mach64 and while root's KDE res is beautiful 1024x768, my personal login show up at 800x600 max? If the box's x settings are shared in Xf86config, then why the variance?
