If your new to linux i would recomend knoppix which boots a runs from the cd, this is the best way to get to know linux before doing a complete install to your system. unless you have a spare computer to load it on, linux can be frustrating at times, and until you become farmiliar with it.
But if you would like to do a full install i would recomend mandrake 9.1 or 9.2

I totally agree with Knoppix it's so great and it wouldn't harm your existing OS so you can get used to the linux environment http://knoppix.net
Other Linux on a CD I found very cool is Morphix http://morphix.sourceforge.net/modules/news/ as they say installing is a breeze
I also agree with Mandrake, it's easy efficient got many GUI tools so you dont have to run into the shell do modification by hand heh http://www.mandrakesoft.com/
The most hated OS by me is Redhat it pissed me off bad config files even bad graphic installer for version 8 few times i had to use the text mode installation to get it on because it wasn't switching to text box for putting the admin pass (root pass) ironicly my both servers running Redhat one is v7.3 which i liked better than 8 on the other server. yea Redhat was pain but thanks to it now i know how to set webserver & fileserver using just plain text messing with conf files hehe

Man, CollegeLinux was my first distro after Redhat (which sucked) and I loved it. It even came w/ WINE. It starts off by default in the ... 4th runlevel, I think...the one w/ the gui for picking desktops...yeah... and that's always nice for a n00b who doesn't like messing w/ /etc/inittab...innitab...whichever
And it's small
and it comes w/ kde and blackbox
Doesn't come w/ OO.org, but that's not a pain to install at all
comes w/ wine
is really pretty and not very intimidating -- good for a n00b

College Linux is great for newbs.
I installed the Darth Vader edition something like 8 months ago. That got me really interested in using Slack (which it's based on), so it's been off my box for a while now.
However I remember being pretty impressed with how friendly it was. Right now I'm thinking of getting it for my Dad to get him off his XPee addiction.
Happy Holidays.

I used it, but my secondary sys was waaaay to slow (try running it on a P133 w/ 32 meg ram). From what I saw it's a very user friendly distro, it installed in half an hour here (and it was my first OS I installed my self)

Yea the 32megs of RAM doesn't cut it for GUI and what even worse having an old HD that would really slow things! for one of the servers I'm using a fujitsu 6.4 GB 4500RPM and it's working so nice. the system is working better than any DELL! that has about same processor & RAM with even newer HDs. Ironically, all the newer fujitsu HDs burns out so fast! and they've been seued by too many!
I hate DELL must destroy all!
